Record attendance at open day in Schleswig-Holstein

New construction of a house for 400 sows in Croatia

Hundreds of visitors admire new house for 300 sows

The stream of visitors did not break until late afternoon. And in the end, an estimated total of 500 farmers, experts, neighbours, friends and family inspected the brand new house for 300 sows built by Kerstin and Jürgen Horns in Nindorf, Northern-Germany, on the occasion of an open day.

Concept, realization and technology of the new house filled the experts with great enthusiasm. The new house was built in only six months on some farmland approximately 1000 m as the crow flies from the homestead of the Horns family.

³The ideal dimensions for a family-operated farm², was the unanimous tenor of the visitors. ³One can only congratulate them on doing this step². We would like to take the opportunity to follow suit and would like to thank Kerstin and Jürgen Horns for the confidence they showed in choosing Big Dutchman for the realization of this project.

The following pictures give all those who were not able to attend the open day in person an overview of the state-of-the-art technology involved in this project:

The outside shell of the house has a dimension of 55 x 33 m. It consists of sand-lime brick, including insulated walls and trapezoidal sheets.

The animal-friendly waiting area for pregnant sows is designed so that the sows can be kept in groups. It comprises sufficient room for 150 animals. Feeding is done at three computer-controlled Callmatic II feeding-on-demand stations from Big Dutchman. Thanks to small ear tags, every sow is supplied with the right nutrients corresponding to her individual constitution and pregnancy state. The Horns have equipped the whole house with a dry feeding system.

There are 116 Big Dutchman crate stands installed in the service area. Fresh air is led into the house via perforated air ducts, the stale air is guided to the outside via exhaust air chimneys in the rear end of the house.

Especially interesting are the modern farrowing pens with straight line-up. The new plastic flooring Sow Comfort with integrated rubber mat improves the sow¹s stand, increases the foothold of sows and piglets and reduces piglet losses. This innovation has been elected novelty of the year 2005 by the expert editorial staff of the "Deutsche Landwirtschaftsverlag".

The brackets for the farrowing pens are made of stainless steel.

There are 720 flat-deck places for weaners available. The other piglets are reared in older houses on the farm. This is also where the training of young sows takes place.

The exact control of the zone heating is done by means of the stepless three-way mixer (right). The whole climate system is controlled by Big Dutchman¹s user-friendly climate computer MC 235.
